Logging into SAM

Use the following procedure to log into SAM:

In your browser, enter http://sam.cengage.com in the Address field and press the Enter key.

Result: The SAM Login page displays.

Enter the username and password you received.

Click Login.

Result: If this is your first login, the SAM Terms and Conditions page displays. (The SAM home page displays on subsequent logins.)

Optional: If this is your first time logging into SAM, follow these steps:

  • When the SAM Terms and Conditions page displays, click I Agree to accept the terms and conditions.
  • Enter your Secret Question and Answer to help you recover your password if you forget it.

NOTE: The Answer is not case sensitive.

  • Enter and confirm a new password.

Result: The SAM Home page displays.

NOTES:

This section does not apply to LMS Integrated SAM.

Depending on the IKey Settings the EULA may not display.

SAM requires that you use an email address as your account’s username. If your account also has a communication email address, it displays by default. You can enter another email address if you wish. You need to do this only once.

SAM also supports single sign-on (SSO) with Cengage Brain (http://www.cengagebrain.com) enabling you to use the same username and password for both systems. If you are a returning SAM user, the first time you log into the SAM environment, SAM checks Cengage Brain for an existing account. If you have an account, a prompt displays enabling you to enter your Cengage Brain password instead of your SAM password. If you forget your Cengage Brain password, click the Forgot your password? link to retrieve it.

Forgot Password

Use this procedure to reset your SAM password.

On the SAM Login page, click the Forgot your password? button.

Result: The Retrieve Your Password dialog box displays.

Enter your username.

Click Continue.

In the dialog box that displays, enter the answer to the security question.

Click Submit.

NOTE: If you do not remember your answer, click the Contact Tech Support if you can't remember your answer button.

Result: SAM sends an email to your email on record with a link to reset your password.

Open the email and click the password reset link. Follow the instructions to reset your password.

Profile Information

Enter your profile information. See the following table for more information on each field:

ID# (optional)

Maximum 20 characters and cannot contain any of the following: ~ ` ^ * “  $ % # ! \ / > < & ; : | ,

Communication Email (optional)

Maximum 128 characters

Secret Question

Select a secret question from the drop-down menu

Enter an answer to the selected Secret Question

Blackboard ID

Enter your Blackboard ID

IMPORTANT: The username/email and password you enter become your login credentials for Cengage Brain (http://www.cengagebrain.com). If you have a Cengage Brain account, use that username and password when you register for SAM.

Start a SAM Project

  1. Login to SAM.
  2. Use the links on the Calendar, Always Available list, or Activity List to find the assignment you are looking for.
  3. Review the Assignment Details screen:


  1. Click Start to display the project assignment screen.
  2. Instructions: Download and open the instructions file.
  3. Start Files: Download and save the Start file(s). Some projects may have several start files.
  4. Log out of SAM. This is to prevent any time-out errors when you return to submit your work.
  5. Follow the directions in the start file. When you save the file with a new name, only change the number at the end (don't try to retype everything) and remember that the Office application will add the extension so you do not have to type it.
  6. Verify that your name appears in the file: The instructions will indicate where your name should appear in the file. If your name is not displayed, download and save the file from SAM again.
  7. Continue working through each step in the instructions. Keep the following in mind:
    1. Be careful with spelling, spacing, capitalization, and punctuation as mistakes will cause you to lose points when the file is graded.
    2. Complete the steps in order to the best of your ability.
    3. Do not do extra steps that are not in the instructions.
    4. When you have completed all steps, SAVE and CLOSE the file. This step is imperative! When you submit work in SAM the file will be read from the drive where it is saved, not from what is displayed on the screen.
    5. With the project complete, the file saved and closed, you are ready to submit the file for grading.

Submit a SAM Project for Grading

When you are ready for a project to be graded, save the file and close the application.

  1. You will need to know the drive and folder where your file is saved. The file cannot be submitted from what is displayed on the screen.
  2. Login to SAM and locate and click on the assignment you wish to submit.
  3. Review the information in the Assignment Details window and click Start.
  4. Click the Choose Files button in the Grade Submission section.
  5. Navigate to and select the file to submit. The file names must be exactly the same.

  1. If file name is correct, click the Submit button.
  2. SAM will display a confirmation screen once your submission has been accepted. Look for 3 green check marks to appear on the screen.

Trouble? If SAM indicates that the file name is incorrect, check the spelling, spacing, and underscore characters carefully.

Another common naming problem is caused by a Windows setting that hides the file extensions. To verify this setting on your computer, open the Computer window (Click Start > Computer), click the Organize button, and click Folder and Search Options. On the View tab, make sure the option to Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked and click OK. Use the Computer window to open the drive and folder where your SAM project file is saved. Verify the file name and if needed, rename the file.

One other common problem is related to a time-out erro in SAM. If you have been logged into SAM for a while without being active in it, you may receive a generic error message. Simply log out of SAM and log back in to submit your file.
